Die fotografischen Inszenierungen zu Gender and Placement in Public Spaces in Usti nad Labem entwickelten wir in einem geladenen Arbeitsaufenthalt in Usti nad Labem (CZ, 2025) für die Ausstellung Shared Existence im House of Art Usti nad Labem. Wir wählten hierfür Orte in der Stadt aus, deren Nutzung Gegenstand von Aushandlungsprozessen ist: die Faculty of Art and Design, das Regional Authority Office Building und die Northern Terrace Siedlung.
Das Projekt versteht sich als künstlerische Forschung über jene räumlichen Ordnungen, die an den ausgewählten Orten den Stadtraum strukturieren. Räumliche Ordnungen sind immer auch Geschlechterordnungen und soziale Ordnungen, die (Un-)Möglichkeiten der Raumnutzung festlegen oder verhindern und bestimmten Personen Plätze zuweisen oder auch verweigern. Sie werden nicht nur durch bauliche Setzungen, sondern auch gesellschaftliche Regeln und die Darstellung und Wahrnehmung von Räumen strukturiert. Unsere Inszenierungen folgen Judith Butlers Konzept von „vulnerabiltiy and resistance“, indem wir in wechselseitiger Bezugnahme, aus vulnerablen Positionen zum Thema machen, für welche Personen welche Räume zugänglich oder auch verschlossen sind. Hierbei loten wir das Potential künstlerischer Arbeiten aus, in räumliche Ordnungen, die immer auch Geschlechterordnungen sind, zu intervenieren, sie in Frage zu stellen oder umzuschreiben.

We developed the photographic installations for Gender and Placement in Public Spaces in Ústí nad Labem during an invited residency in Ústí nad Labem (CZ, 2025) for the exhibition Shared Existence at the House of Art Ústí nad Labem. For this project, we selected locations in the city whose use is subject to negotiation processes: the Faculty of Art and Design, the Regional Authority Office Building, and the Northern Terrace housing development.
The project is conceived as artistic research into the spatial orders that structure urban space at the selected locations. Spatial orders are always also gender orders and social orders that determine or prevent the (im)possibilities of spatial use and assign or deny places to certain individuals. They are structured not only by architectural configurations but also by social rules and the representation and perception of spaces. Our productions follow Judith Butler’s concept of “vulnerability and resistance” by addressing, through mutual reference and from positions of vulnerability, the question of which spaces are accessible or closed off to which people. In doing so, we explore the potential of artistic work to intervene in spatial orders—which are always also gender orders—to question them or to rewrite them.
